Lamma Island is a small island in the South China Sea; a rural haven twenty minutes by ferry from the hustle and bustle of central Hong Kong.
Although much of Lamma is countryside there are a number of small villages dotted around and the island is home to about six thousand people.
Lamma is a wonderful place to live and many people commute to work on the frequent ferries. They live in the countryside but work in the city.
However in order to maintain this idyllic life it is necessary to ensure that our impact on the Lamma environment does not destroy the characteristics which make it so attractive. Over the last few years sufficient care has not been taken and the result has been an erosion of these characteristics.
To tackle these issues Living Lamma operates a two pronged approach. Firstly it responds to Government proposals and planning notices to lobby for careful development that will enhance the natural beauty of the island and make it a more pleasant place to live in and visit. Secondly it campaigns against actions that destroy natural habitat or create eyesores.
As the largest village on the island Yung Shue Wan is our primary area of concern. A little thought and effort could result in an elegant and pleasing village set next to a beautiful harbour. A setting which would rival any in the world.
